Bradford Hindu Council attends the Bradford Cathedral for the Annual Legal Service 08.02.2026

Today, Mr. Ravinder Dharni (Chairperson), Mr. Deepak Sharma (PRO), and volunteer Mrs. Naresh Sharma represented the Bradford Hindu Council (BHC) at the historic Bradford Cathedral for the Annual Legal Service.

Joining members of the judiciary, civic dignitaries, and faith leaders, the BHC delegation participated in a cornerstone of the district’s civic calendar that brought the community together to reflect on the principles of justice, integrity, and shared responsibility.

The service commenced with Welcome Prayers led by Revd Canon Ned Lunn, Canon for Intercultural Mission and the Arts.

The atmosphere of unity was further highlighted by the participation of Professor Adeeba Malik CBE, the newly appointed Lord Lieutenant of West Yorkshire, and David Barraclough, Under Sheriff of West Yorkshire. Together, they delivered the Justice Readings, symbolizing the collaborative effort required to uphold the law and serve the people of West Yorkshire.

A central moment of the service was the sermon delivered by the Rt Revd Arun Arora, Bishop of Kirkstall. Drawing from the Gospel of Luke, Chapter 10, the Bishop reflected on the dialogue between a lawyer and Jesus, focusing on the timeless question: “Who is my neighbour?”
The sermon emphasized the importance of being a “good neighbour”—a value that resonates deeply with the Hindu principle of Sewa (selfless service) and the BHC’s mission to foster a supportive, interconnected Bradford. Following the sermon, the congregation observed a moving period of silence for personal reflection, allowing attendees to contemplate their roles in building a more just and compassionate society.

“Attending today’s service was a powerful reminder of our shared values,” said Mr. Deepak Sharma of the BHC. “The message of being a good neighbour is universal. It was an honour to stand alongside our city’s legal and civic leaders to reaffirm our dedication to the wellbeing of all Bradfordians.”

The Annual Legal Service continues to be a vital tradition, acknowledging the foundations of the UK legal system while embracing the diverse modern fabric of the city.

The presence of the BHC underscores the ongoing dialogue between Bradford’s many faith communities and its legal institutions.
